RESUMO

The phenomenon of dormancy and the evolutionary causes for its development are presented together with the effects of the climatic factors: temperature and light. Shade and darkness have been found to enhance bud breaking in peach. The effects of various temperatures on chilling accumulation, chilling negation and chilling enhancement are described. The way these are computed in the face of global warming is explained, using the dynamic model. When natural chilling is less than that required, there are ways of compensation, up to a certain level. Various horticultural, physical and chemical means to achieve this are described, including bending branches, reducing vegetative vigor, shading the orchard, sprinkling to reduce daytime temperature and the application of various chemicals to break dormancy. When winter chilling is markedly reduced and temperatures increase considerably, the use of dormancy avoidance is suggested in frost-free places. This technique can induce a new growing cycle by avoiding dormancy altogether. However, the best approach is to breed high-quality cultivars requiring much less chilling. Another aspect discussed in this work, independent of the chilling requirement, is the negative effect of heat spells in winter and spring on the abnormal development of flower buds, leading to a low level of the stone fruit set and a reduced yield.

RESUMO

Apricot has undergone an important cultivar renewal during the last years in response to productive and commercial changes in the crop. The impact of the sharka disease (plum pox virus) prompted the release of cultivars resistant/tolerant to this virus, leading to a major cultivar renewal worldwide. This has caused high variability in chilling requirements on new releases that remain unknown in many cases. In many apricot-growing areas, the lack of winter chilling is becoming a limiting factor in recent years. To deal with this situation, growers must choose cultivars well adapted to their areas. However, the information available on the agroclimatic requirements of the cultivars is very limited. To fill this gap, in this work, we have characterized the chilling requirements of 13 new apricot cultivars from Europe (France, Greece and Spain) and North America (USA) in two experimental collections in Aragón (Spain). We established the chilling period using male meiosis as a biomarker for endodormancy release over two years. Chilling requirements ranged from 51.9 Chill Portions (CP) to 70.9 CP. Knowing the chilling requirements of cultivars will help growers to select suitable cultivars adapted to the chill availability of their region.

RESUMO

Background: Food exchange lists allow health professionals to generate healthy eating plans adapted to individual or population needs. The objective of this study was to develop the first food exchange list based on the macronutrients and energy provided by the various food groups of the Ecuadorian diet. Methods: The list of Ecuadorian food exchanges was constructed by going through the following phases: (1) Selection of household measurements; (2) Selection of tables and databases of the nutritional composition of food items; (3) Definition of food groups and quantities; (4) Determination of the average energy and macronutrient values of each group; and (5) Photographic record. For the definition of food quantities, statistical criteria were applied according to a standard deviation of ±2SD; thus, for carbohydrates: ±5 g, total fat: ±2 g, and protein: ±3 g. To ensure the inclusion of the food items in the groups, a coefficient of variation of less than 30% and a Z value of ±2 were also considered. Results: The list of food exchanges is presented with eight general groups according to the predominant nutrient (carbohydrates, proteins, or fats), and, where necessary, subgroups are included according to the second predominant nutrient. The list includes 404 food items with their photographic record, represented by their net weights and corresponding household measurement. All food items met the statistical criteria that help to reduce the variability of the nutritional composition of the food items in each group. Conclusion: This is the first list of Ecuadorian food exchanges based on statistical criteria. It represents a novel tool for public health professionals as well as researchers. Resulting healthier eating plans may improve daily dietetic practice, facilitate better clinical trial designs and help establish guidelines according to Ecuador's cultural and dietary patterns. The described methodology can further be used to develop other food exchanges lists for patients with specific nutritional requirements.

RESUMO

Previous studies dealing with plant-based meat analogs confirmed the potential of oral processing methods to identify options for improving those products. Knowing that sensory perception can be influenced by adding condiments, this short communication aimed to investigate the texture and oral processing of four plant-based burger analogs and a beef burger when consumed in portions or as part of model meals with buns and sides. Texture profile analysis indicated that beef burgers and analog E were the toughest. Two analogs (B and S) showed textures close to beef, while one (analog D) displayed significantly lower values for hardness, toughness, cohesiveness, and springiness. The instrumental data was only partly reflected in the mastication parameters. Adaptations in mastication behavior were expected, but differences between the plant-based analogs were smaller than anticipated, although clear differences were observed for consumption time, number of chews and number of swallows. On the whole, mastication patterns concurred within different consumption scenarios (portions, model burgers), and significant correlations with instrumental texture were obtained.

RESUMO

Over the past decades, a generalised increase in food portion sizes has probably contributed to the growing global obesity epidemic. Increasing awareness of appropriate portion sizes could contribute to reversing this trend through better control of calorie intake. In this study, a comparison of standard portion sizes in European countries for various food categories shows a wide variability of their importance for food, nutrient, and energy consumption according to government and institutional websites. On the other hand, the overall averages appear to be largely in line with the values indicated by the Italian Society of Human Nutrition, which is the most comprehensive and detailed document among those evaluated. The exceptions are milk and yoghurt, for which the reference portions in Europe are generally higher, and vegetables and legumes, for which portions are smaller than those reported in the Italian document. Moreover, the portion sizes of staple foods (e.g., pasta and potatoes) vary according to different food traditions. It is reasonable to consider that the creation of harmonised standard reference portions common to the European countries, based on international guidelines and scientific evidence, would significantly contribute to consumers' nutritional education and ability to make informed choices for a healthy diet.

RESUMO

Blood serum contains essential biochemical information which are used for early disease diagnosis. Blood serum consisted of higher molecular weight fractions (HMWF) and lower molecular weight fractions (LMWF). The disease biomarkers are lower molecular weight fraction proteins, and their contribution to disease diagnosis is suppressed due to higher molecular weight fraction proteins. To diagnose diabetes in early stages are difficult because of the presence of huge amount of these HMWF. In the current study, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) are employed to diagnose diabetes after centrifugation of serum samples using Amicon ultra filter devices of 50 kDa which produced two fractions of whole blood serum of filtrate, low molecular weight fraction, and residue, high molecular weight fraction. Furthermore SERS is employed to study the LMW fractions of healthy and diseased samples. Some prominent SERS bands are observed at 725 cm-1, 842 cm-1, 1025 cm-1, 959 cm-1, and 1447 cm-1 due to small molecular weight proteins, and these biomarkers helped to diagnose the disease early stage. Moreover, chemometric techniques such as principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least square discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) are employed to check the potential of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy for the differentiation and classifications of the blood serum samples. SERS can be employed for the early diagnosis and screening of biochemical changes during type II diabetes.

RESUMO

Excess caloric intake increases the risk of weight gain, and diet-related chronic diseases. Restaurants play an integral role in the portions of food people consume. Standardization of portion sizes in restaurants can help customers recognize appropriate portions. Through customer interviews, we aimed to assess and understand the feasibility, perceptions, and acceptability of standardized portions in restaurants. Kaiser Permanente partnered with three restaurants in Southern California to create alternative menu options of meals that would not exceed 700 calories. Kaiser Permanente members who lived within a 5-mile radius of the restaurants were informed through email about the study. Customers (N=33), who dined at one of the restaurants participated in a one-on-one semi-structured interview. Interviews were recorded, typed, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using thematic analysis. Four themes emerged from the analysis: 1) Customers perceive standard portions as a better choice and the benefits outweigh regular portions; 2) Individual and restaurant-related factors may influence portion preferences; 3) Restaurant portions are perceived to be in excess of what customers need; and 4) Portion standardization is an evolving area for restaurants. Our findings suggest positive perceptions and acceptance of standardized portions among restaurant customers. Customer awareness and restaurant standardization procedures can improve customers' dining experience.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) enables the systemic assessment of intratumoral heterogeneity within tumor cell populations and in diverse stromal cells of the tumor microenvironment. Gain of treatment resistance during tumor progression or drug treatment are important subjects of tumor-centric scRNA-seq analyses, which are hampered by scarce tumor cell portions. To guarantee the inclusion of tumor cells in the data analysis, we developed a prescreening strategy for lung adenocarcinoma. METHODS: We obtained candidate genes that were differentially expressed between normal and tumor cells, excluding stromal cells, from the scRNA-seq data. Tumor cell-specific expression of the candidate genes was assessed via real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) using lung cancer cell lines, normal vs. lung cancer tissues, and lymph node biopsy samples with or without metastasis. RESULTS: We found that CEA cell adhesion molecule 5 (CEACAM5) and high mobility group box 3 (HMGB3) were reliable markers for RT-PCR-based prescreening of tumor cells in lung adenocarcinoma. CONCLUSIONS: The prescreening strategy using CEACAM5 and HMGB3 expression facilitates tumor-centric scRNA-seq analyses of lung adenocarcinoma.

RESUMO

Background: The association between tumor location and breast cancer prognosis has been controversial. We sought to explore the relationship between tumors located in central and nipple portion (TCNP) and Chinese breast cancer. Patients and methods: A total of 1,427 breast cancer patients were recruited. There were 328 cases of TCNP and 1,099 cases of tumors in the breast peripheral quadrant (TBPQ). The chi-square test was used to compare different variables between TCNP and TBPQ groups. A one-to-one propensity score matching (PSM) was applied to construct a matched sample consisting of pairs of TCNP and TBPQ groups. Kaplan-Meier curves were used for survival analysis of disease-free survival (DFS), breast cancer-specific survival (BCSS) and overall survival (OS). The Cox proportional hazards regression model was applied to identify prognostic risk factors. Results: The median follow-up time was 58 months. Compared to TBPQ, TCNP patients had significantly larger tumor size, more frequent metastasis to lymph nodes (LN) and more proportions of TNM stage II-III. DFS, OS and BCSS rates were markedly lower in the TCNP group as compared to the TBPQ group before and after PSM (all p < 0.05). Multivariate Cox analysis showed that TCNP was an independent prognostic factor for breast cancer. Subgroup analysis indicated that for breast molecular subtypes and TNM stage II-III breast cancer, TCNP were related to worse prognosis. Multivariate logistic regression revealed that TCNP was an independent contributing factor for LN metastasis. Conclusion: In Chinese breast cancer, compared to TBPQ, TCNP is associated with more LN metastasis and poorer prognosis.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Bulimia nervosa (BN) and anorexia nervosa (AN) are potentially life-threatening eating disorders (ED) that primarily affect young people, mostly women. The central common pathology is linked to the relationship with food and with abnormalities in food intake. A previous study indicated that individuals with AN tend to overestimate food portion sizes compared to healthy controls (HC), but no study has investigated these patterns in BN, which was the objective of this study. METHODS: Women with BN (27), AN (28), and HC (27) were asked to rate different meal portion sizes in two conditions: as if they were supposed to eat them (intent-to-eat condition) or in general (general condition). BN results were compared to HC and AN using mixed model analyses. RESULTS: BN showed larger estimations compared to HC, while smaller estimations compared to AN. These differences were found mostly for intermediate portion sizes. No difference for conditions (intent-to-eat; general) was found between groups. CONCLUSION: When estimating food portion sizes, individuals with BN seem to fall intermediately between HC and AN. ED symptoms in BN were most strongly associated with higher portion estimation. This might therefore reflect one aspect of the cognitive distortions typically seen also in AN. A therapeutic option could include the frequent visual exposure to increasing portions of food, what may serve to recalibrate visual perceptions of what a "normal-sized" portion of food looks like. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level II: Evidence obtained from well-designed controlled trials without randomization.

RESUMO

The endolymphatic sac is a small sac-shaped organ at the end of the membranous labyrinth of the inner ear. The endolymphatic sac absorbs the endolymph, in which the ion balance is crucial for inner ear homeostasis. Of the three sections of the endolymphatic sac, the intermediate portion is the center of endolymph absorption, particularly sodium transport, and is thought to be regulated by aldosterone. Disorders of the endolymphatic sac may cause an excess of endolymph (endolymphatic hydrops), a histological observation in Meniere's disease. A low-salt diet is an effective treatment for Meniere's disease, and is based on the assumption that the absorption of endolymph in the endolymphatic sac abates endolymphatic hydrops through a physiological increase in aldosterone level. However, the molecular basis of endolymph absorption in each portion of the endolymphatic sac is largely unknown because of difficulties in gene expression analysis, resulting from its small size and intricate structure. The present study combined reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction and laser capture microdissection techniques to analyze the difference of gene expression of the aldosterone-controlled epithelial Na+ channel, thiazide-sensitive Na+-Cl- cotransporter, and Na+, K+-ATPase genes in the three individual portions of the endolymphatic sac in a rat model. A low-salt diet increased the expression of aldosterone-controlled ion transporters, particularly in the intermediate portion of the endolymphatic sac. Our findings will contribute to the understanding of the physiological function of the endolymphatic sac and the pathophysiology of Meniere's disease.

RESUMO

Boar ejaculate is released in several well-characterized fractions, differing in terms of sperm concentration, seminal plasma volume, and composition. However, the inclusion of the last part of the ejaculate for artificial insemination (AI) purposes is still under debate due to its controversial effects. Thus, there is a need to study the potential synergistic impact of the different ejaculate fractions. We aimed to evaluate the effect of accumulative ejaculate fractions on sperm conservation, AI performance, and offspring health. Ejaculates (n = 51) were collected and distributed as follows: F1: sperm-rich fraction; F2: sperm-rich + intermediate fractions; F3: sperm-rich + intermediate + poor fractions. Each group was diluted in a commercial extender, packaged in seminal doses (2000 × 106 sperm/60 mL), and stored at ~16 °C. On day 3 of conservation, sperm were analyzed and used for AI (n = 174). High sperm quality was observed after storage without a significant difference between the groups (p > 0.05). Moreover, no differences were obtained for AI performance (pregnancy and farrowing rates, and litter size; p > 0.05) and offspring health (growth and blood analysis; p > 0.05). Conclusively, the presence of all ejaculate fractions within the seminal doses does not impair the reproductive performance, reporting important economic savings according to the economic model included here.

RESUMO

Many systems for classifying food products to adequately predict lower all-cause morbidity and mortality have been proposed as front-of-pack (FOP) nutritional labels. Although the efforts and advances that these systems represent for public health must be appreciated, as scientists involved in nutrition research and belonging to diverse Italian nutrition scientific societies, we would like to draw stakeholders' attention to the fact that some FOP labels risk being not correctly informative to consumers' awareness of nutritional food quality. The European Commission has explicitly called for such a nutrition information system to be part of the European "strategy on nutrition, overweight and obesity-related issues" to "facilitate consumer understanding of the contribution or importance of the food to the energy and nutrient content of a diet". Some European countries have adopted the popular French proposal Nutri-Score. However, many critical limits and inadequacies have been identified in this system. As an alternative, we endorse a new enriched informative label-the NutrInform Battery-promoted by the Italian Ministry of Health and deeply studied by the Center for Study and Research on Obesity, Milan University. Therefore, the present position paper limits comparing these two FOP nutritional labels, focusing on the evidence suggesting that the NutrInform Battery can help consumers better than the Nutri-Score system to understand nutritional information, potentially improving dietary choices. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: II. Evidence was obtained from well-designed controlled trials without randomization.

RESUMO

Objective:To establish the Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC) characteristic chromatogram of different parts of Alpinia oxyphylla Miq., and to compare different parts of the chemical components based on multivariate statistical analysis. Methods:The UPLC was used to establish the fingerprint of Alpinia oxyphylla Miq. . The chromatograms were matched to generate the UPLC charactersistic chromatogram of different parts. Based on the variance analysis of single factor, combined with the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) ,Cluster Analysis (CA) and the Partial Orthogonal Least Square Discriminant Analysis (OPLS-DA) to analyze the differences of different medicinal parts of Alpinia oxyphylla Miq.. Results:16 common peaks of Alpinia oxyphylla Miq. were demarcated in crude drugs, compared with the medicinal materials of Alpinia oxyphylla Miq., the peak 13 (tectochhrysin) was lost in the decoction pieces, and the shell were missing peak 5 and peak 6. The results of PCA and CA showed that 15 batches of different medicinal parts of Alpinia oxyphylla Miq. can be broadly divided into 3 categories. The OPLS-DA result showed that the value of the peak area of peaks 14 (Nootkatone), 4, 7 and 12 were the main factors affecting the chemical composition of different parts of Alpinia oxyphylla Miq. .Conclusion:The fingerprint determination method established in this study is stable and controllable, which could distinguish the different parts of Alpinia oxyphylla Miq. .

RESUMO

An accurate quantification of energy intake is critical; however, under-reporting is frequent. The aim of this study was to develop an indirect statistical method of the total energy intake estimation based on gender, weight, and the number of portions. The energy intake prediction was developed and evaluated for validity using energy expenditure. Subjects with various BMIs were recruited and assigned either in the training or the test group. The mean energy provided by a portion was evaluated by linear regression models from the training group. The absolute values of the error between the energy intake estimation and the energy expenditure measurement were calculated for each subject, by subgroup and for the whole group. The performance of the models was determined using the test dataset. As the number of portions is the only variable used in the model, the error was 26.5%. After adding body weight in the model, the error decreased to 8.8% and 10.8% for the normal-weight women and men, respectively, and 11.7% and 12.8% for the overweight women and men, respectively. The results prove that a statistical approach and knowledge of the usual number of portions and body weight is effective and sufficient to obtain a precise evaluation of energy intake after a simple and brief enquiry.

RESUMO

Dietary guidelines recommend consuming 30 g of nuts per day to reduce the risk of chronic disease. A 'handful' is commonly used to guide consumers. Research is lacking on how this translates into actual gram amounts. This study quantified the grams of nuts represented by different portion size measures, including a 'handful' and '30 g serving' among 120 participants. Each participant was randomised to a sequence where they received three of six different nut types (from almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, macadamias, peanuts, and walnuts) and were instructed to take a: 'usual serving', 'handful', 'small handful', 'large handful', and '30 g serving' of each. Combining all nut types, the median 'handful' was 36.3 g, compared to 28.7 g for the estimated '30 g serving' and 24.8 for the 'usual serving'. The 'large handful' was approximately double the 'handful' (61.3 g), whereas the 'small handful' was about half (16.7 g). Eighty-three percent of portions chosen were at least 80% of the recommended 30 g intake when participants were asked to take a 'handful', compared to 63% for the '30 g serving'. It appears a 'handful' can be used as a practical tool to guide recommended nut intakes, and increases the amount selected compared to instructions to take a '30 g serving'.

RESUMO

Although the impacts of teleconnection indices on climate metrics such as precipitation and temperature in California have been widely studied, less attention has been given to the impact on integrated climate indices such as chill accumulation. This study investigates the linkages between large-scale teleconnections and winter chill accumulation for specialty crops in California, which may enable more effective and dynamic adaptation to in-season climate variability. Three large-scale teleconnection indices were selected: Oceanic Nino Index (ONI), Pacific-North American teleconnection pattern (PNA), and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) index to assess their effects on chill accumulation. The Chill Hours Model and Dynamic Model are adopted to calculate chill accumulation in Chill Hours (CH) and Chill Portions (CP) from November to January. Three major crop-producing regions, including the Central Coast, Sacramento Valley, and San Joaquin Valley, are used as the focused regions. Our results suggest CP generally has a stronger response to teleconnection patterns than CH in California. The correlations between chill accumulation and teleconnections are generally weaker during the summer than other seasons, and significant correlation can be observed 2-10 months before the start of the chill accumulation period. Among the three teleconnection indices, ONI is most weakly correlated to chill accumulation in focused regions, while PDO shows the strongest positive correlation and explains up to 39% variability of CP. PNA presents the most widespread negative correlation with chill accumulation. When aggregated to different teleconnection modes, +3.6 above-average CP is expected during ONI positive mode; +2.3 above-average CP is expected during PDO positive mode, while +2.1 above-average CP is expected during PNA negative mode. This study provides insights on early-season chill prediction and feasible management and adaptation strategies, and the methodology presented here can be used to develop decision support tools of risk control for agricultural producers and policymakers.

RESUMO

The authors surveyed hospitals across the country on their policies regarding overlapping surgery, and found large variation between hospitals in how this practice is regulated. Specifically, institutions chose to define "critical portions" in a variety of ways, ultimately affecting not only surgical efficiency but also the autonomy of surgical trainees and patient experiences at these different hospitals.

RESUMO

The present study addressed the effect of heat treatment process on microstructure of an AlSi10Mg lattice structure with a body-centered cubic unit cell manufactured via laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). The as-manufactured lattice specimen exhibited a unique cellular structure composing of primary a-Al phases bounded by a-Al/Si eutectic microstructure. A gradient microstructure (continuous microstructural changes) was found in the node and strut portions composed of the lattice specimen. The microstructure appears more equiaxed and coarser with approaching the bottom surface of both portions. The continuous microstructural changes contributed to a variation in hardness measured at different locations in the as-manufactured lattice specimen. Si particles finely precipitate in the primary a-Al phases, and eutectic Si particle coarsening occurs at an elevated temperature of 300 °C. The microstructural coarsening is more pronounced at a higher temperature. A number of significantly coarsened Si particles and a stable Fe-containing intermetallic phase (b-AlFeSi) were observed at all locations in 530 °C solution-treated specimen. The homogenous microstructure results in a constant hardness value independent of the location in the lattice specimen. These results provide new insights to control the compressive properties of the AlSi10Mg lattice structure manufactured via LPBF by subsequent heat treatment processes.
